More Than Advice: Why Jesus Can’t Be Just a Good Teacher

What do you really need when something is seriously wrong?

Imagine going to the doctor with chest pain—tightness, shortness of breath, that sense that something isn’t right. The doctor listens carefully, nods, and then says:

“Try to reduce stress. Eat a little better. Maybe take a walk each day.”

No tests. No treatment. Just advice.

At that point, you wouldn’t say, “What a great doctor.”
You’d say, “That’s not enough.”

Because when the problem is serious, you don’t just need advice—you need someone who can actually do something about it.

Is That How We Treat Jesus?

A lot of people are comfortable with Jesus—as long as He stays in the category of “teacher.”

  • “He taught love.”

  • “He taught kindness.”

  • “He gave great moral guidance.”

And all of that is true.

But if that’s all Jesus is, then He’s basically a spiritual life coach—offering helpful suggestions for living a better life.

The problem is… that’s not how Jesus presents Himself.

He says things like:

  • “I forgive sins.”

  • “I am the way.”

  • “Follow Me.”

Those aren’t just moral teachings. Those are personal claims.

A Category That Doesn’t Hold

Here’s where things get real.

If Jesus’ claims aren’t true, then He’s not just a teacher—He’s mistaken… or worse.

But if His claims are true, then calling Him a “good moral teacher” is far too small.

You can’t shrink Jesus down without ignoring what He said about Himself.

More Than Advice—You Need Rescue

This matters because it changes how you see your life.

If Jesus is only a teacher, then it’s all on you:

  • Try harder

  • Be better

  • Fix yourself

But if Jesus is who He says He is, then the situation is deeper than bad habits.

It’s about sin. Brokenness. Distance from God.

And that’s not something advice can fix.

So Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance offering suggestions.

He steps in.

  • He takes your sin

  • He goes to the cross

  • He gives His life

  • He rises again

Not to improve you from the outside—but to save you from the inside out.

A Question to Carry This Week

So here’s a simple question to sit with:

Am I treating Jesus as a source of advice… or as the Savior I actually need?

Because in the end, Jesus didn’t leave us the option of keeping Him in the safe category of “good teacher.”

He calls us to trust Him for something much greater.
