When You Wonder If You’ve Gone Too Far

Sometimes people walk away from God deliberately. Something happens. Anger sets in. Faith gets shaken. And they decide they’re done.

Other times, it’s less dramatic. We drift. Prayer becomes less frequent. Worship becomes easier to skip. God slowly moves from the center of life toward the edges. Then one day we look around and realize, I’m not where I used to be.

And that can raise a frightening question:

How does God react when we walk away from Him?

Jonah knew the question.

He had deliberately run from God. He boarded a ship going in the opposite direction from where God had sent him. Then came the storm, the sea, and finally the terrifying descent into the depths.

From inside the great fish, Jonah prayed:

“I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple!”

Jonah wondered whether he had finally gone too far.

But there, in the depths, Jonah remembered something. He remembered who God is.

And looking back, Jonah began to recognize something else: God had been at work to rescue him even when Jonah didn't understand what God was doing.

That realization leads Jonah to one of the great declarations in Scripture:

“Salvation belongs to the LORD!”

Jonah had run from God.

God had come after Jonah.

And we know even more than Jonah did, because we know Jesus.

In Jesus Christ, God has shown us exactly how far He is willing to go after wandering sinners. He entered our broken world. He carried our sin to the cross. He passed through death and rose again.

He did it for you.

Maybe you've wandered deliberately. Maybe you've simply drifted. Maybe you've wondered whether you've disappointed God once too often or put too much distance between yourself and Him.

Jonah's story gives us an answer.

God's response to Jonah wasn't to shrug His shoulders and move on.

He pursued him. He never gave up on Jonah.

And in Christ, He has pursued you.

God's mercy is bigger than Jonah imagined. It reaches deeper than the sea, farther than our wandering, and beyond the places where we assume God could never possibly find us.

You may discover that while you were wondering how to find your way back to God, He had already come looking for you.

Because salvation still belongs to the Lord.
