Where Do You Go to Find God?

A simple question with a life-changing answer. Discover why the Christian life isn't about searching for God, but receiving Christ where He has promised to meet His people. Based on Hebrews 10:19–25, this post concludes our Growing Faith sermon series by reminding us that faith is continually nurtured as Christ gives Himself through His Word, His Sacraments, and the fellowship of His Church.

Where Do You Go to Find God?

If someone asked you, "If you wanted to meet God today, where would you look?" how would you answer?

Most of us have never really thought about that question. Yet our answer reveals a great deal about what we believe. We naturally imagine that if God were going to reveal Himself, it would be in some dramatic or overwhelming way—through an extraordinary spiritual experience, a powerful emotion, or something that leaves us in awe.

But Hebrews 10 tells a different story.

Instead of leaving us to search for Him, Christ tells us exactly where He has promised to meet us. Because of His death and resurrection, we have confidence to draw near to God. He has opened the way. He is our great High Priest. And He continues to come to His people through His Word and His Sacraments, giving again the forgiveness, life, and salvation He won for us on the cross.

That means the Christian life isn't about chasing spiritual experiences or wondering whether we're "close enough" to God. It is about receiving Christ where He has promised to be found. Every Sunday, He gathers His people around His gifts. He speaks His promises into our ears. He places His own body and blood into our hands and mouths. He strengthens the faith that He Himself created. As Luther beautifully summarized, faith is nurtured where Christ gives Himself through the preaching of the Gospel and the Sacraments.

And that doesn't end when the worship service is over.

The promises we hear on Sunday continue to echo throughout the week as we read the Scriptures, pray, encourage one another, and remind fellow Christians of Christ's promises. In those moments, Christ is still at work, continually nurturing the faith He has given.

As we concluded our Growing Faith series, perhaps the biggest discovery wasn't really about faith at all.

It was about Christ. He creates faith. He strengthens faith. He deepens faith. He anchors faith in Himself. And He continues to nurture faith by continually giving Himself to His people.

So this week, don't spend your time wondering whether your faith is strong enough.

Instead, look to Christ.

He has not left you searching.

He has promised where He will always be for you.

Reflection Question:
When you're looking for comfort, peace, or assurance, where do you instinctively look first? How does Hebrews 10:19–25 invite you to look instead?
